Insurance replacement made easy.
Filing insurance claims due to a break and enter, flood damage, fire damage or power surge is an involved and time-consuming process. When it does happen
it is best to be prepared. Here are a few tips to assist you through the process.
When making a claim promptly notify your insurance broker or agent. If it is a break and enter claim notify the police as the insurance company will require a police report number. Read your policy carefully. Some insurance companies include a sample claim form requesting information for speedy claims process.
It will also detail the limits in your policy, such as theft coverage for jewellery,
furs, bicycles, boats and motors, money and business property.
List items stolen or damaged. Make your claim as complete as you can. It is
important to have as much proof of ownership as possible. Include receipts,
warranty cards, instruction manuals, boxes, photographs or videos, and bank
or credit card statements. It is up to you to prove the validity of the claim.
Include all the accessories. If your digital camera is lost or stolen list a memory card, carry case or rechargeable batteries if they were also taken. If you have lost a computer, know what software you had. If your TV is stolen, list all the extra cables you may have purchased. This will help get your claim settled quicker as it will reduce time going back and forth with your Adjuster.
Once you have filled out schedule of loss form correctly the Adjuster will be ready to replace the items on your claim with like, kind and quality. Most people have replacement cost coverage. Replacement cost coverage means that the contents of your home are insured for the amount it costs to replace them by using current market values which is not necessarily what you originally paid for items on your claim. For instance, price on most electronics will have come down considerably
in the past 10-20 years.
Be patient during the claims process. Things may not go as quickly as you wish
but most insurance companies want to settle home insurance claims as quickly as
possible. Bring any questions or concerns to your Adjuster, they are there to guide and assist you through the process.
Some tips on how to prevent a break-in in your home:
Have a professional install an alarm system and motion sensor lights outside your home. Lock doors and windows even if you are away for only a short period of time. Cancel newspaper delivery for the period you are away. Have someone
collect your mail, clear your driveway or mow the lawn when you are gone on
an extended vacation.
